Torchwood

I really didn't care for Torchwood, mostly because of the Gwen/Owen stroyline snd the nonsensical plots, but the Jack/Jack kiss had me in tears. Matt Rippy turned in a sterling performance as the closeted RAF pilot who has fallen in love with Captain Jack.

Did you cry because of this scene? Or did you watch the whole series? There are some issues with the plotting but overall I find it a nice escape and they utilize a bisexual (or is he omnisexual?) hero with more of a gay slant as the pivitol leader... and he is VERY popular in Britain.

I watched the entire series in its original UK run last year (Bit Torrent rulez!). Like I said, I was disappointed that the show focused mostly on Gwen and Owen and not on Jack, and I really thought that the writing was not nearly as good as on Doctor Who. Russell Davies might be a good showrunner, but he tends to suck as a writer. For instance, Ianto risked his job and his life protecting his Cyberman girlfriend, and raged in grief when Jack sicced the pteranodon on her. For him then to become Jack's part-time shag just seems ridiculous.

Moreover, BBC America cuts the more risque bits from the show. The UK version showed male nudity that was cut here. (Rhys, Gwen's longsuffering boyfriend, shows his very nice backside. Alas, no nekkid Ianto or Jack. .. YET!))
How have you been able to see the UK version? Well the show started off really as Gwen's perspective and really has been about Gwen. But what I really like the most is the relationship between Jack and Tosh the most. Ianto has some hidden reason for being there but I am not sure yet what it is. There are a ton of inconsistencies throughout the series so far, but as escapist fun its good enough for me. However, some Ianto nudity would be interesting... or at least a Jack/Ianto cuddle scene. What I want to know is why is Ianto considered not really part of the team?
How have you been able to see the UK version? I downloaded the episodes from filesharing sites using Bit Torrent. I dion't like waiting for UK TV shows to come to the US, so I download shows I want to watch.

why is Ianto considered not really part of the team? Because, to put it into DC federal contractor lingo, he's not a revenue-producing subject matter expert, he's support staff. When you're writing an RFP, you don't ask the receptionist to sit in on the project, do you? Same deal with Ianto. He provides manpower when needed, but mostly he's Torchwood 5's interface with the external world, plus he makes the tea.

I wanted to like Torchwood more. I did like how the show centered around Gwen and not Jack, but it was just all over the place from the comical episodes like "Random Shoes" (I liked that one) to horror with "Countrycide". The tricked out SUV was ridiculous and are they seriously running a clandestine government agency with just 5 people?

I'm hoping for more from series 2.
Yeah some of the episodes were silly and weird... but in the end we love the "badness" of it like many of us like Showgirls and Valley of The Dolls.
I imagine it would be very hard to find the right tone and series one came out kind of rough because what worked. Some adolescent experimentation maybe? This was a spinoff of a family show that was trying that was trying to be more adult and edgy, but would still have a large crossover audience and on top of gear up for another spinoff for kids (The Sarah Jane Adventures) that would also have a large crossover audience with Doctor Who.
The naugtiness of it is incidental though. The show keeps my attention for the transformations of the characters. Where are they going internally in their head? The weakness of the show is its plotting though. If Series 2 can pick that up then I will be happy... as long as we have some John Barrowman/Ianto action of course!
